Cutesy couples hanging all over each other, radio stations playing love songs all day and virtually every TV channel showing one romantic comedy after the other – it’s a bit sickening. For those of you who do not want to spend their day watching sappy movies, I suggest having a terrifying vampire themed movie day! Really make Valentine’s Day suck .

Review of Magdalena by Eric Danflod

Chapter three of Eric Danflod’s premier novel Magdalena ( The Chronicles of the Tuatha De Deanann Book I ) contains the following sentence: By that time the scientists hadn’t been as close to the 20th century’s conventional unanimity that had regarded the pyramids themselves or what the mathematically perfect colossal structures at the Giza Plateau had once been erected for. Having read aloud or shown this sentence to ten different friends, I got the same reaction each time. No one could tell me what it means. Quite rightly, too. Technically, its flaws abound. More, its flaws permeate the more-than-seven-hundred pages of this novel. To start, the author wrote in the passive voice–not only here but in at least three fourths of the book. It thus contains all the razzle and dazzle of cell phone instructions. As far as this sentence goes, it not only ends in a preposition but lacks a concluding clause to serve as an object. Thus it draws a comparison to–nothing

Way back in the 1840s, the penny dreadful (rightfully named–each chapter cost a penny and most had all the literary merit of an insurance company’s internal memo) Varney The Vampyre introduced a brand new idea in vampire fiction. Given the youth of the genre, that doesn’t sound quite so impressive. On the other hand, it goes hand in hand with the other trope Varney pioneered–the reluctant nosferatu. The title character, while arrogant and ruthless, felt disgust at his state. He even approached the (initial) heroine of the tale, Flora, with a legend–the idea that if he were to find a willing human bride, then he might cease to be a vampire. One big chunk in the middle of this 200-plus chapter tome consists of Sir Francis seeking a bride with exactly that in mind. For the record he never manages it, so whether his plan would have worked remains in doubt. Here we have the first literary vampire who sought a way out of his condition. Others followed, although not in great numbers. Countess Zaleska in the film Dracula’s Daughter made a kind of cinematic history that way, becoming the first such creation in a movie to look for (and fail to find) a cure. John Carradine’s Dracula in another universal film, House of Dracula , also sought out a scientist seeking for a cure–although in his case it seems (somewhat confusingly) to be either a means of getting close to a young woman or perhaps to corrupt the brilliant scientist who went on to successfully cure the Wolfman. Barnabas Collins in the first film and both television series of Dark Shadows looked for a cure as well, eventually succeeding not once but twice! Surely a record. Most likely, this was also the first such success. Later two other characters in Dracula The Series lost their fangs due to some extraordinary circumstances (it looked at the series’ end as if a third had also been cured, maybe). A female vampire in the syndicated (and terrible) program Night Man managed to become human again. In the otherwise remarkably gritty Near Dark two vampires again walked in the sun via what must surely be the most deus ex machina means ever–a simple blood transfusion. Really. That is all it took. Of course in The Lost Boys the moviemakers hedged their bets–Michael and a couple of others weren’t full vampires yet because they hadn’t killed anyone. In the Poltergeist The Legacy television series, the exact same loophole was employed. Smallville featured vampires who were in fact mutated by kryptonite, and in that case a cure did become available.

A few months back it was announced that City of Bones , the first book in The Mortal Instruments series by Cassandra Clare, was being made into movie, and every website reporting the news was all like “Yay! A new vampire movie!” Even I (someone who had never read the books) jumped on the bandwagon and wrote about the upcoming flick. Well, I just finished reading City of Bones, and now I can tell you that the vampires definitely won’t play a big role in the film, that is, if they’re in it at all. When I wrote about the movie all those months ago, I admitted that while I knew there were vampires in the book, I didn’t know how big of a part they played – now I know.

Scott Snyder Promises Future ‘American Vampire’ Miniseries

Scott Snyder, author of the wonderfully bloody ongoing comic series American Vampire , has promised that fans can expect more spinoffs in the future. That’s some kickass news for the horror lovers amongst us. Snyder told CBR that more miniseries will follow the recent World War II title American Vampire: Survival of the Fittest , which was illustrated by Sean Murphy (Joe the Barbarian).

Blade Anime Launches in January

It appears that all sorts of old boy band members are getting into acting these days, we already have *N Sync and New Kids on the Block members having a go at it, and now, one of the Backstreet Boys – Kevin Richardson . Kevin has the lead role in The Bloody Indulgent , a disturbing vampire film slated to be released sometime in 2012. This definitely isn’t the type of film I was expecting from him.

The latest film in the Twilight franchise, Breaking Dawn Part 1, is actually sending viewers to the hospital. Oddly enough, the cause isn’t Kirsten Stewart’s painful lack of acting skills or Jacob’s swoon-worthy abs – but the big bad (and disgusting) birthing scene. According to reports, the scene in Breaking Dawn where Bella gives birth to her vampire baby has been triggering seizures in theaters nationwide.

National Geographic Offers Insights into the Hybrid Baby of ‘Breaking Dawn’

It appears that not even the wonderful National Geographic isn’t immune to the pull of the Twilight franchise. They recently interviewed a vampire folklorist on whether or not hybrids like Renesmee in Breaking Dawn exist in historical accounts. University of Arizona professor George Gutsche, who lectures on both vampires and werewolves, answered NG’s questions perfectly, explaining that there are vampire/human offspring in folklore, but that they are nothing like Renesmee.

After rumors claiming that Indian director Satish Kaushik had bought the film rights to Twilight (which is just ridiculous), he came out and confirmed that he had bought the rights to a book about vampires, but that it’s definitely NOT Twilight. “ I have not bought the rights to Twilight! I am in the process of setting up a film that is going to be India’s first vampire film, and comparisons and confusions with Twilight abound due to that.
